Why do Chakras have Colors?

Being healthy is not only about physical and mental health. More and more people are realizing that we have an energetic body and if you want to be healthy, you need to look at the energetic side too. Most people have heard about chakras as part of the energy body and know each chakra is associated with a color, but how does that work?

Everything Vibrates

Everything in the universe vibrates at a certain frequency; including humans. Chakras come from the yogic tradition and are referred to as our body’s energy centers through which all of our life force energy (or prana) flows. Each of these chakras are associated with a different color, sound and vibration. It is also associated with specific organs and body parts and is linked to our emotional well being.

Colors all have a specific frequency or vibration linked to it due to different wavelengths. For example, red has a larger wavelength than blue. Red has the lowest frequency/vibration. From there the vibration increases through the colors with violet having the highest frequency (or shortest wavelength) of all visible light.

So how does this fit into chakra world? Chakras are energy centers and just like colors, they vibrate at different frequencies. So each chakra is associated with a color that has the same vibration and wavelength as that chakra.

Chakra Colors

Root chakra, closest to earth and lowest vibration, correlates with the color red, which also has the lowest vibration of the visible colors. Working upward towards the crown chakra, you end with violet which has the highest vibration and if you look back, you have a full rainbow of colors through the chakras.

Here are the colors associated with each chakra

  • Root chakra — Red
  • Sacral chakra — Orange
  • Solar Plexus chakra — Yellow
  • Heart chakra — Green
  • Throat chakra — Blue
  • Third Eye chakra — Indigo/purple
  • Crown chakra — Violet/White

Conclusion

Now that you know how chakras correlate with different colors, why not start using color to balance your chakras? You can do this through the foods you eat, clothes you wear, crystals, visualization and more.
